This statue depicts the
ruler of the Norse pantheon sculpted of cold-cast resin and painted
in muted tones that give the appearance of brass construction. Odin
is the very name related to the word oor, meaning fury and
excitation. Odin was the chief of the Norse Gods, the lord of
wisdom, war, battle and death. He was also known to have held sway
over magic, poetry, prophecy, victory and the hunt. He stood for a
complex mingling of many of the virtues that the Norse people held
sacred. It was he who received the souls of valiant warriors that
died in battle and the women he favored became the legendary
Vawho strode among the battlefields and brought the valiant
dead to the halls of Valhalla, where they would wait training and
feasting. Here he is shown sitting regally in his throne set upon
Hlidskjalf which was a place from which he could perceive everything
that happened in the universe. Close at hand are his ravens Huginn
and Munninn (Names that translate into Thought and Memory), who fly
around the earth daily and report the happenings of the world to
Odin at night. The war wolves Geri and Freki rest close by his feet.
This remarkable statue stands 10" tall and 8 1/2" wide. |
